ERIC THREADGILL

My name is Eric Dior Threadgill. In 1998, when I was 17 years old, I committed the crime of second-degree murder, and I am now 45 years old today. In 2021, Senate Bill 26 was passed to recognize that children under the age of 18 should not be forever defined by the worst mistake they made in their lives.

A turning point in my life came in 2002 when I was 22. During a phone call with my paternal grandmother, I listened to her still grieving the death of my father, who, at age 22, had passed away in 1986 when I was 6 years old. Hearing her made me realize, in a way I hadn't understood before, that the lifelong hurt I had caused another family. That realization struck me deeply and has stayed with me every day since.

Years later my grandmother also passed. Losing her gave me a deeper understanding of grief and of how permanent that loss is. I carry the weight of her absence just as I carry the knowledge of what I took from another family. In many ways, it feels like my own form of karma to live with that pain and use it as a constant reminder of why I must live differently.

Over these 27 years, I have dedicated myself to change. I have taken every rehabilitative class offered by the Missouri Department of Corrections and have facilitated over half of them with the aim of helping others. From my teens to now in my mid 40s I have grown from an immature boy into a man who understands responsibility, accountability, and the value of human life.

I do not claim to have all the answers, but I know I am ready to live differently. I want to use my freedom to serve others, to mentor young people so they never make the mistakes I did, and to be an example of change and rehabilitation. I am truly sorry for the pain I have caused and I will carry that with me forever. At the same time, I believe I have demonstrated growth, maturity, and readiness to live as a change man.
